tea for two

January 18, 2007

Last night I was drinking some hot tea and you know what occurred to me? Make Keely tea bags. So I didn't even finish drinking my tea, instead I went and made her two little bags.

I don't know if you can tell, but they have "tea" inside of the bags. It's just a piece of dark brown fabric to give it a bit of realistic appeal. The "bag" fabric is kind of see through.

Sooooo, are y'all sick of my food fun, yet? You see this is what happens everytime I start making something. I get obsessed. It's all I think about and it's almost all I want to do until I extinguish my thoughts on the subject and then I never want to do it again. nuts. I'm trying to slow myself down though before it gets to that point. Trying to break my habit/work ethic/obsesso-matic nature.

I knew fabric food wasn't an original idea (but the burrito design-maybe?). I did want to make an ice cream or a cupcake for Keely, so I thought I'd look on etsy to see if there was some neat stuff out there- there was.  Check out these links if you want some inspiration for you food creations or if you just want to buy some. Make sure to look at the other items that the seller/crafter offers too.

Chenille ice cream cones

Complete dinners made out of felt, and this little felt pizza looks easy to make too.

Recycled bag of blueberries.  I was thinking you could do the same kind of recycled bag and fill it with blue wooden beads too as an alternative.

Katurah's cupcakes or these ones    Cute goodies, no?

Alright, there ya go. Go crazy crafters.

i’m so glad you made keely tea bags.

because when i first saw the picture, i thought you had completely lost it and was making decorative tea tags for your tea bags. you know, something pretty for you to look at while you watch your tea brew. whew!

totally fun! my daughter would love playing with those.
what an excellent and original idea. they look beautiful,
if they were not meant for toys i could picture them just
being placed out for display. very nice.

Wow, I’m looking those tea bags! You have inspired me to start making a basket of fabric foods for my 1 yr old niece for her birthday. Thanks!

Not sure if you’re interested, but you should really think of putting some on etsy. When I was little, my mom made my dollhouse and everything in it. I mean, literally, everything, from the furniture to the food made of sculpey. She ended up selling quite a bit of the miniature sculpey food. I’ll have to photo some of it and post about it, since some still exists in my Christmas Bear House. Just a thought.

    Hi Amanda,
I know you posted it awhile ago, but I just found your tote bag tutorial last night. I whipped up a couple from some fat quarters I had around and declared them stuffed animal sleeping bags. My kids had so much playing with them this morning that they were almost late for school!

    Thanks so much!!

I really need to make some food for Alex. My poor boy uses legos for pretend cake. Check out this glorious food : http://rowena.typepad.com/rostitchery/2006/10/food_glorious_f.html

If you aren’t sick of my glowing comments, then no… I’m not sick of seeing your genius at work…

    Must. Make. Fabric. Food. Today.

Are you tired yet of hearing me say how much I enjoy and admire your imagination? ‘Cause if you are, you need to stop whipping up such cute stuff!

I am loving the fabric food. I just wish I had a little girl to make some for. Maybe I’ll make some and store it away for the day when my little guy might be interested. Keep posting the food–I love it!

you are so very clever! really!

i think my children would be like “what are tea bags?”

PLEASE keep the ideas coming! I’m loving this.

sick of it? I’m so not sick of it! um, would you adopt my daughters for one day, sew your brains out for them with little cute play food, and then I’ll take them back?!! what’s your calendar look like next week?

i’m piping up to say that i also love seeing all the amazing things you whip up for keely – absolutely inspirational!

    How sweet!
My kids love to play pretend and have tea parties. I’ve been thinking of making placements + napkins for them… i think I’ll add some tea bags to my list. They would love them.

    Thanks for the inspiration.

Those tea bags are so cute. Why not? If Fisher Price can make food out of plastic (filled with dyes and all sorts of horrible chemicals), I think fabric food is delightful!

  • 18. jennifer  |  January 18, 2007 at 9:37 pm

Just when I thought you had run out of ideas! I am loving the play food ideas. How about a lemon colored sack in a mini pie pan with cotton balls on top? Lemon Meringue Pie anyone? Tea Bags, I could have never dreamed that up!

And do not beat yourself up about your mode of operation. I am reading this fascinating book about creativity and what “makes” people creative and you have to go with the flow of your genius dear (as you have observed with Keely).

    tea bags are way cute!

  • 20. Luckybeans  |  January 19, 2007 at 4:57 am

I think I *need* some of those tea bags. *NEED* them. Yes. To go with the cupcakes.

  • 21. JenniferW  |  January 19, 2007 at 10:34 pm

I’m popping for my daughter to get old enough to pretend play. I already have a whole bunch of wooden food I’ve picked up here and there. I’ve sewn a few eggs, etc. I think it’s just that *I* can’t wait to pretend play with her. Burritos for two, comin’ right up. Thanks for the inspiration!

Stop it, cause you are making the rest of us look bad, lady. But really, I think I’ll just steal all your play food ideas and try to convince myself I am also clever and creative. Ummm, enough about me… I love the tea bags, as you can tell and I think Bea would as well. — now, to check out all the other creative people in those links…

    Those are so cute!

For many years I taught preschool after I majored in early childhood education in college. I am wowed by your ability to intuitively know about your child’s interests and abilities. I knew so many parents and educators who want children to be little adults. As a wise person said once, “the business of childhood is to play”. I raised my son in a similar manner and he is now grown up. I still want to make the play food though. A long time ago Vogue had a pattern of fabric watermelon, eggplant, and some other stuff in pillow size. I had such fun making them at the time just because…Alas, I have moved so many times that they were lost along the way.
