file under: great plans for when you have a 6 week old

January 8, 2008

Oh lordy. What have we done?

Whelp, for numerous reasons (one being that we've done gone & lost our minds) we decided to switch THREE friggin' rooms of our house around. All the furniture and even repaint 2 of them. What a complete disaster. My word. I took some photos of the chaos but I can't find the cord to the computer/camera to upload them so…no photos. Consider yourself lucky. We got the furniture for the three rooms switched now, but their stuff is piled up everywhere. We have a path leading to our kitchen and there are paths through most of the house too. How did we get so much crap in this little house? And then there are the closets that have to be rotated around now. Help me. I'm thinking of throwing it all away. Our house usually looks clean, but the closets. Oh man. The closets are B.A.D. I've been doing what I can while holding Milo, but my body aches now from all the carrying. He is a bit over 10 pounds. So far, he'll only sleep for about 10-20 minutes by himself so all the other hours he is on me or laying next to me. We reluctantly started him on the reflux med. this week too. So far I've seen no change.

Hello Mr. 6 weeks old

Anywho. Tomorrow I have my 6 week postpartum appt. That in itself is fun, but as an added bonus I get to take my babes with me (please don't have a screaming fit Milo. Please don't) AND it's very early in the morning (for getting us 3 out the door anyway) AND my husband's car is broken SO we have to drive him to work in the morning and then come back home and THEN get ready for my trip. AND it is supposed to be raining all day. Oh the fun we'll have.

So anyway. I'll be back here when our house is back in order. And I'll reply to those of you who have emailed me then.

Keep repeating – it’s just one day. It WILL pass.

You do like a challenge don’t you?

It must be a post-nesting thing. We tried to paint our bedroom and bathroom with a newborn and had to call in Grandma reinforcements.

Clear a nap spot now for crashing when you get home! Good Luck. Sorry the meds aren’t helping little Milo.

oh my goodness. Well, that seems like about the right amount a chaos that one could expect for a family of four. Too funny. The happy baby moon HAD to end sometime lady. I kid ya, I kid ya – cause I love ya.

Truly – I wish I could be there to help hold or organize. I LOVE to organize other people’s stuff. Really — it is a bit of an illicit passion.

Bea was on the reflux medicine too starting at 3 months though — It helped her not have the crying/gagging/choking thing but she still had burps/hiccups all the time. Hope it kicks in or his little tummy grows quickly or both….

    Hugs.

oh, and have you tried a sling? it totally saved me and my arms.

Omigosh, Milo looks so much like Keely! I’m about to be a granma, but I do remember when my days seemed a lot like what you’re going through now. A friend, a wise friend, told me, “The days drag on, but the years fly by.” And they did. My sons are now 28 & 33. I think it was just a blink of an eye since they were babes. Hang on!

Found your blog a bit ago and it brings back such memories of raising children. Don’t worry so much about the reflux. My children did it rarely but my first graddaughter did it frequently but she still got so fat!!! He’s pooping ok right? And gaining weight?

Yes, no fun dragging them all to a 6 week postpartum. Hopefully a nice nurse will help out? It does get better and easier…it does. I know it seems like chaos reigns and it will slightly for a long while until they are out of the house maybe? But, it does get easier and things fall into a routine and soon enough, at four months, milo’s tummy will feel better and he will not be as fussy. Our first was like that and I had to watch what I ate because the traces in my breastmilk annoyed her…like dairy and such. Just breathe. :)

Oh my… hope it goes ok!

I hear you — all that carrying is a workout. :) I have really horrible posture now, too.

If he does scream through the appointment, it isn’t as bad as you imagine. My doctor was very understanding. Man, did Charlotte ever scream, too. :)

Your Milo is so beautiful… I see that he was born the day after my baby girl… I had her on Sunday the 25th… 8lbs 12 oz 20 1/4 inches… they were almost the same size! I have my 6 week checkup on Monday… not looking forward to that, don’t know what to expect as this is my first baby and first visit to the doc since the birth. And yes, she will be coming with me… that should be interesting!

I second the suggestion for a baby carrier of some sort — the pouch-style is really easy when their weight is below 15 or 20 lbs. It frees up your arms to do other things, and makes it feel much less *heavy* to hold them, but they like the warmth and company of being close. The moms on the website thebabywearer.com have lots of suggestions for buying/making and using various baby carriers, if you’re interested. It made a huge difference for me.

I understand the need to reorganize — I just moved my house around as well. Give yourself time. Or maybe just do a big purge and throw out some of it instead of trying to reorganize. ;)

Wow, what a time you’re having! I’m sure all the reorganisation will be worth it in the end – hang in there!

Just wanted to say that my baby had a very similar reflux problem, particularly with the choking and gagging at night. I could never get the doctor to take it very seriously, but I was just so worried about him that I wasn’t getting any sleep. Propping up the mattress helped slightly, but in the end I slept with him in the spare room for the first three months, and that seemed to help his breathing for some reason. Then he just grew out of the problem. We tried Zantac, but it didn’t seem to do much. Anyway, I guess just to let you know that it should eventually get better. All the best.

Oh man they never tell you about the nesting that takes place after the baby arrives ;)
